   Attendance Statemnet Statement on Attendance at Curricular Activities

The College of Medicine offers a curriculum with a variety of pedagogical activities to achieve its goals of exposing the student to the content necessary to the practice of medicine, fostering a sense of professionalism, instilling in the student the concept of life-long self-directed learning, preparing the student for his/her role as both learner and teacher, and inculcating the concept of teamwork that is essential to the practice of medicine in the modern healthcare environment. These activities include, but are not limited to, large group lectures, team-based learning activities, interactive small group discussions, case-based presentations, and interactions with standardized patients.

It is the position of the faculty and curriculum committees that student participation in all curricular activities is essential. No component of the curriculum is designated as optional by the curriculum committees, course directors or administration, other than those clearly defined elective, optional or extracurricular.

Students are responsible for all material presented in regularly scheduled activities whether or not they attend. Although the faculty designate all activities as essential, attendance is not routinely documented in all settings. However, active participation is required, and attendance will be documented, for the activities such as:

  • All small group learning discussions and laboratory sessions;
  • Large group lectures that are clearly denoted as having a patient present as part of the activity;
  • Team-based learning sessions;
  • All medical interview and physical diagnosis sessions;
  • All examinations;
  • Clinical experiences, such as the ENT and Ophthalmology exercises, that are part of CFMP.
  • Special or one-time courses, programs or events that are clearly defined as mandatory.
