Process Overview

Planning Initiative - Phase I and II:
The initiative commenced with a steering committee kick-off meeting on November 2, 2006. This was followed by an environmental assessment and a series of interviews with key stakeholders from November to January.

Three members of the AMC Strategies team (Diana Carmichael, Becky Levan, and Jennifer Heenan) conducted the interviews and completed the environmental assessment in time for a day-long strategic planning retreat on February 12, 2007.

The retreat included members of the steering committee and their guests who engaged in a rich discussion of the interview and environmental assessment findings, followed by a brainstorming session on preliminary mission, vision and goal development.

Planning Initiative - Phase III:
We have recently concluded the work of four strategy teams:

• Translational and interdisciplinary research
• Organizational development, structure and capability
• Centers of excellence and program development
• Educational innovation.

Each of these teams was charged with examining issues that emerged during the Phase I/II retreat of the steering committee and made recommendations to the steering committee on strategy development and implementation that will shape the future of our organizations. The teams met in four sessions from May to July and made final recommendations to the steering committee in September.

Planning Initiative - Phase IV:
The plan was presented to the faculty for comment in October 2007 and finalized in 2008.
